Back To The Roots: Here's The Flamin' Groovies, Live In 1972

I thought it would be well to give the old band their shot. I think Webb's cover is "tighter." But, hindsight is always 20/20. The Groovies were a gas, and I'd say that Mick, Keith & the Stones were actually no better at the time.

Mick Jagger himself said in interviews that he thought the Flamin' Groovies were a better band than the Stones. Having said that, it's a shame that the Flamin' Groovies found little success in their own country and had to relocate to England to find an audience. (The Groovies were always much more appreciated in Europe than in the U.S.)

I'm really impressed here with Cyrill. He played a mean-ass lead guitar!

After repeated listenings of this, I'd say that it's a crime that the first two minutes of this didn't somehow make the Top 10. The Groovies drift after that, but the first two minutes of this are a complete knockout.

Sweet Jebus, way to dig up some Proto-Punk gold Joe... Too bad these guys were overshadowed by The Stooges and MC5 from my neck of the woods during the early 70s.

I suppose it's typical of my age group, but I just never could get into punk during its heyday. But something keeps gravitating me toward these "Proto-Punk" bands of earlier, like the Groovies and The Stooges. The Doors could be a bit dorky at times, but even they foreshadowed punk rock in some ways. But somehow, I just never could get into the post-Pistols stuff much. Stuck in the Sixties, I guess.
